Election day arrives in America The first polls close in America, as Barack Obama is expected to win AS THE first polls closed in America on Tuesday November 4th, there were signs that turnout would be large—with perhaps as many as 130m people voting—and some small indications that the Democrats would enjoy encouraging results. Mark Warner, the Democratic candidate to be senator in Virginia, was projected to pick up a seat there. Barack Obama, the Democratic candidate to be president, could claim an early victory after Dixville Notch, a tiny constituency in New Hampsire which usually swings behind the Republicans, instead backed the senator from Illinois. To nobody s surprise it looked as if Mr Obama had taken Vermont, whereas his rival, John McCain, had taken Kentucky. More generally, early exit polls quoted by CNN suggested that most voters (some 62%) see the economy as the main issue of the election, a fact which is likely to favour Mr Obama. (To read The Economist s Democracy in America blog as it produces up-to-the-minute commentary, click here.)Such indications offered an early confirmation of the opinion polls, which could hardly be clearer. Mr Obama leads in almost all of the 15 or so “swing states” that will determine the election. Mr McCain faces not so much of an uphill battle as a vertical ascent wearing two lead boots, one marked “Bush” and the other marked “Palin”. He has failed to make any discernible headway in a target list of five states that went for John Kerry in 2004 and which he thought he might be able to pick off. And because Mr Kerry so very nearly threw out George Bush in 2004, Mr Obama has had a solid base on which to build. It means that all he needs to do is win either one big state that Mr Kerry lost, such as Ohio or Florida, or win a couple of medium-sized ones. ...

Fake Steve Jobs heart attack story posted by teenager The prankster who posted an amateur citizen s report that Apple CEO Steve Jobs had suffered a major heart attack earlier this month has been identified as a teenager who possibly did not post the report for financial gain. The identity of the 18-year-old prankster was not known, though a Bloomberg report that cites two unnamed sources, refers to the prankster as a "he." The Securities and Exchange Commission is investigating the motives of the teenager to see if market manipulation was at play but so far have not found such evidence, according to the Bloomberg report. Shortly after the Oct. 3 report appeared on CNN s unfiltered and unedited iReport site, a forum for regular folks to post news items, shares...

Does It Matter If Black Plus White Equals Black Or Multiracial? "Is Barack Obama Black or Biracial?" a recent CNN.com headline asks. Should such racial characterizations of people like Obama -- who have one black parent and one white parent -- really matter? According to a new study, they do matter. When study participants knew of a person s black-white ancestry, in comparison to not knowing of the parentage, they quickly adhered to the simplistic characterization of biracial people as black.

SEC investigating false rumor on Jobs health The Securities and Exchange Commission will investigate Friday s false report that Steve Jobs was whisked to the emergency room, AppleInsider reports. The inquiry: Was the posting on CNN s iReport an attempt to manipulate the market? CNN pulled the page after Apple denied the rumor. AP just reported that CNN will hand over the user information to the SEC. CNN spokeswoman Jennifer Martin said the SEC contacted iReport.com Friday afternoon, and that the site s staff is "doing its best to provide them with information about the posting." Martin said that "Johntw," the author of the Steve Jobs post, had never posted in iReport.com before. She did not know when the person joined the site. While the DMCA provides safe harbor to...
