Glassdoor.com allows students free access to impartial job reviews One of my first posts writing here was on Glassdoor.com and how you can see your potential future salaries. After being told by a public relations person, they ve now opened up the entire Glassdoor.com database for students for free, without having to post anything. They have a "give-to-get" policy, so ordinarily you d have to post a review or job salary thus contributing to the database before allowing the person access to the rest of the database. Although this is a good system, students are now exempt from this and can browse at free will and time to thousands of job descriptions from tens of thousands of companies. Looking for that right company after you graduate is often daunting, but to...

xkoto launches support for Microsoft SQL Server Today xkoto announced that they ve added Microsoft s SQL Server to the list of database management systems that they re supporting, fulfilling a promise to expand their offering to support many databases made when they exited stealth mode in December 2007. For those keeping track, I introduced xkoto and its capability to virtualize database access in the post, xkoto’s GridScale virtualizes data access. This is a different approach to the problem of database scalability, performance, availability and reliabiliity that others are fielding. What does xkoto do? Here s a snippet from my original post: xkoto has looked at the problem of data access, performance, scalability and availability in a new way. Rather than trying to monitor the buffers in the database, monitor output...

Oracle enters hardware market; Launches storage server to ride shotgun with database Oracle CEO Larry Ellison on Wednesday unveiled its first ever hardware product--a storage server with embedded software designed to work with the company s databases and be used in a grid. The Exadata programmable storage server aims to put database intelligence next to each drive. Oracle and HP also launched a "database machine." The hardware rollout, which was cooked up in a partnership with HP, is aimed the emerging problem of moving data from hard drives to database servers. The storage server took three years of development with HP and has been tested for about a year with key customers such as Google. Ellison, speaking at Oracle s OpenWorld conference, said large databases are creating a fundamental problem: Disk storage systems can t...

AMD unveils Shanghai ; Aims to better compete with Intel AMD on Thursday will launch its "Shanghai" platform, its latest batch of Opteron server chips. With Shanghai, AMD gets a do-over from its ill-fated Barcelona launch. At a high-level, Shanghai gives a 400 MHz speed gain in the same thermal band as Barcelona. Shanghai also triples the cache on the chip to improve performance in database and Java applications. According to Kevin Knox, vice president of AMD s commercial business, "Shanghai pulls us closer to Intel and keeps us competitive for several quarters to come." Overall, AMD is claiming a 35 percent performance boost with up to a 35 percent power decrease--in certain conditions. AMD has been shipping the chips to original equipment manufacturers for weeks and hardware giants such as...

Oracle and HP explain history, role and future for new Exadata Server and Database Machine Oracle Chairman and CEO Larry Ellison caught the Oracle OpenWorld conference audience by surprise the day before by rolling out the Exadata line of two hardware-software configurations. The integrated servers re-architect the relationship between Oracle s 11g database and high-performance storage. Exadata, in essence, gives new meaning to "attached" storage for Oracle databases. It mimics the close pairing of data and logic execution that such cloud providers as Google use with MapReduce technologies.
